Marcel Dumbravan named new head of Moldova's Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office

Moldova's Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office (APO) has a new head, Marcel Dumbravan, who began his duties on Monday.
The appointment was announced to staff by Prosecutor General Alexandru Machidon and the president of the Superior Council of Prosecutors (SCP), Dumitru Obadă.
"The work of the APO has maximum responsibility and public visibility. I am confident that Mr Dumbravan will strengthen the institution, increase investigation efficiency and boost public trust in justice," said Prosecutor General Alexandru Machidon.
For his part, Mr Dumbravan acknowledged the "complexity and difficulty" of his new role. He vowed to "ensure an independent, professional, and transparent justice system" and pledged to work closely with his entire team.
Mr Dumbravan was selected for the role after a competition organised by the SCP in June. He scored 76.64 points, beating rival Octavian Iachimovschi, who scored 72.44.
An external committee also cleared Mr Dumbravan of any ethical or financial integrity issues, with its report approved by the SCP in August. He has worked at the APO since 2008.
The position became available after the previous head, Veronica Dragalin, resigned in February. Ms Dragalin said she was unhappy with a proposed law to merge the APO with PCCOCS (the Prosecutor's Office for Combating Organized Crime and Special Cases). Her departure followed criticism from the current government over the APO's lack of efficiency in combating electoral corruption in the 2024 autumn elections.
