Missing ex-judge charged with £115k fraud

A former judge and court vice-president is now facing charges for allegedly defrauding three people of approximately 2.5 million lei (around £115,000) through fraud and breach of trust, according to the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office.

The criminal case was opened in December 2016, following a collective complaint. Investigators claim that between March 2014 and March 2016, the former vice-president obtained the money as loans from the three people but failed to repay them. She fled the country while still serving as a judge.

Prosecutors also say she failed to fully declare her income in the required asset declarations during the same period.

The criminal investigation was completed in absentia, authorised by the Chișinău Court, Ciocana branch, a decision later upheld by the Central Appeals Court. The former judge has been placed on an international wanted list.

To recover the damages, five of her properties have been seized.

For the offences, the law provides for eight to 15 years in jail and a ban from holding public office or practicing a specific activity for up to five years. She also faces a fine of up to 12,000 lei (approx. £550) or up to one year in jail for false statements in asset declarations.
