Moldova: PAS leader 'unaware' of independent deputies split

The leader of the Party of Action and Solidarity (PAS), Igor Grosu, said he was unaware Dinu Plîngău and Stela Macari, representatives of the Dignity and Truth Platform, who entered the new Parliament on the PAS electoral list, had announced their withdrawal from the future PAS faction.

Mr. Grosu expressed regret at "learning this from the press" and said he hoped the two would support projects aimed at accelerating European integration and justice reform.

"PAS has assumed a fundamental national objective—accession to the European Union. We received the citizens' trust for this mandate. We regret finding out about the announcement of the two colleagues from the press without internal discussion, but we express confidence that all deputies who entered Parliament on the PAS list will honor the mandate received from the citizens, namely accelerating the European path, conducting justice reforms, and ensuring economic development," commented Mr. Grosu.

Parliament Speaker added that PAS has a "clear pro-European majority" given by the citizens and "will ensure the fulfillment of the promises made to Moldovans."

Although Mr. Grosu said the break with PAS by Dinu Plîngău and Stela Macari was not discussed internally, Deputy Lilian Carp said on Wednesday that this was known from the start.

"They were not intended to be part of the faction. They are on the list, but they announced from the outset that they would go separately after the elections. The important thing is that there are 55 pro-European deputies. (...) The important thing was for the right-wing forces to unite and offer a chance for a pro-European majority to exist, and it does. That matters the most," Mr. Carp said.

It is noted that, as a result of the parliamentary elections on September 28, the current ruling party secured over 50.2% of the votes, which translates into a new parliamentary majority consisting of 55 seats.

PARLIAMENTARY ELECTIONS 2025 | FINAL PRELIMINARY RESULTS: PAS - 50.2%, "Patriotic" Bloc - 24.17%, "Alternativa" - 7.96%, PN - 6.2%, and PPDA - 5.62% However, on October 1, two elected officials from the PAS list, Dinu Plîngău and Stela Macari, announced they would be independent deputies.

"I worked in this campaign alongside my PAS colleagues, and we were fair with each other, and it will remain so. (...) Neither Ms. Macari nor I are part of PAS. We had a civic responsibility to act as we did, and now we also have a duty to represent the silent voices in Parliament," Plîngău wrote.

He assured that the two mandates will contribute to "maintaining political stability."

It is worth mentioning that in July, the Dignity and Truth Platform, which was part of the "Împreună" Bloc (Together Bloc), decided to support PAS in the parliamentary elections, and two of its members—Dinu Plîngău and Stela Macari—were included on the party's electoral list in the 42nd and 47th spots, respectively.
