21-year-old gets seven years in prison for scamming elderly with fake accident stories

A 21-year-old man was sentenced to seven years in prison for committing fraud through a scheme involving false claims about relatives being involved in accidents. Along with several accomplices, he deceived multiple elderly individuals by falsely stating that their relatives had been in road accidents. Through this deception, they managed to acquire at least 550,000 lei from the victims.

An investigation was initiated in October of last year after two individuals received phone calls from scammers claiming that their daughters were responsible for causing road accidents. The callers demanded large sums of money for a “favorable resolution” of the situation.

One of the defendants withdrew 11,500 euros in two instalments from one victim and obtained substantial amounts from another victim, resulting in total damages exceeding 550,000 euros.

The Cimișlia Court sentenced the young man to seven years in a semi-closed penitentiary and imposed a fine of 450,000 lei. Additionally, he was prohibited from engaging in certain activities for five years and was ordered to fully compensate the victims for the material and moral damages caused.
