Unlicensed 20-year-old driver jailed four years for killing pedestrian

A 20-year-old man, who was driving without a valid driver's license, injured a 70-year-old pedestrian who later died from the injuries. Chisinau Court based in Buiucani, sentenced the man to four years in prison, to be served in an open-type penitentiary.

According to the Prosecutor General's Office, an accident occurred at the end of May on a street in Chisinau. A young man, who did not possess a driver's license, got behind the wheel of a Ford and violated several traffic rules.

While driving, he struck a 70-year-old man. Initially, the victim was conscious and refused hospitalization; however, he later died from his injuries, a fact confirmed by a forensic examination.

The young man's wife and their minor child were also in the car. The driver attempted to brake before the impact, provided first aid to the victim, and called an ambulance immediately after the accident.

The defendant admitted his guilt and explained that he lost control of the car while trying to brake, expressing regret for what had happened.
