National Radio Day in Moldova: Radio Moldova Director — “We keep up with the times”

On Saturday, November 1, the Republic of Moldova celebrates National Radio Day, as announced in a 2023 government decision. This day was established at the initiative of the "Teleradio-Moldova" Company to correct historical perceptions and acknowledge the vital contribution of radio to the country’s culture and identity.

The challenges facing radio are similar to those encountered by all forms of mass media, according to Cornel Ciobanu, the Deputy General Director of Broadcasting at Teleradio-Moldova. He emphasizes that while television relies on visuals to capture the audience's attention, radio engages listeners through sound. Over the years, the landscape of radio has evolved; today, Radio Moldova can be listened to and watched.

"We must meet the insatiable need for information that people have today by providing the offerings of a modern radio station. In the 21st century, radio has transformed significantly compared to 20, 30, or even 100 years ago. Radio Moldova, along with all stations in the Teleradio-Moldova family, now emphasizes video as well. We produce recorded shows, edit content, and maintain our own websites. We are actively working to keep up with the demands of modernity," declared Ciobanu.

In a message addressed to the institution's employees on National Radio Day, he expressed gratitude, stating, "First and foremost, I thank them for all they do and for their continued belief in radio. The fact that we have been here for three generations proves that radio has not died; it will continue to be an integral part of our lives."

The history of radio in Moldova dates back to 1930, when a Soviet station was established in Tiraspol. However, the first actual radio transmission in what is now Moldova occurred on November 1, 1928, through a signal from Radio Bucharest, followed by the establishment of Radio Basarabia in Chisinau, which was the precursor to present-day Radio Moldova.

After the Republic of Moldova gained independence, Radio Moldova resumed its role as a public institution, promoting national values and serving as a reliable source of information and stability.
