Military components found in truck at Moldova-Romania border

A truck carrying military components was stopped at the Albița border crossing on the Moldova-Romania border overnight.

The incident occurred around 3:00 AM local time as the container-trailer truck was attempting to leave the Republic of Moldova, according to Daniella Nemerenco, Teleradio-Moldova correspondent in Iași.

The driver, a Moldovan citizen, initially told Romanian customs officers that he was transporting "metallic elements." However, a subsequent check revealed the cargo included parts resembling rocket launcher components. The driver stated his final destination was Israel.

The Moldovan Customs Service confirms the case but says it is withholding detailed information "so as not to affect the procedural actions and specific national security measures."

In a statement, the Service explained: "During the coordinated control, initial suspicions were flagged by the Moldovan customs officer, who then informed colleagues from the Romanian customs authority. Based on these indications, we jointly ordered the scanning of the vehicle... This operation was carried out by the Romanian side, according to established procedures."

The truck has since been sealed, and the driver is currently being questioned by law enforcement.

"In the Republic of Moldova, a criminal investigation has been launched, and the case is being investigated by the competent national security authorities. The Customs Service is providing full support to the investigating bodies and maintaining permanent communication with the involved Romanian authorities," the institution added.
