Ciocana crime: EU-extradited suspect faces life imprisonment

A young man was accused of raping and murdering a woman in an apartment in Chisinau in February. He is also alleged to have attempted to stage her death as a suicide. The prosecution has completed the criminal investigation and has submitted the case to the court. If convicted, he faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison or life imprisonment.

The defendant, a 25-year-old man from the Transnistrian region, was involved in a serious criminal case. In February 2025, he was with a woman who provided paid sexual services at an apartment located in the Ciocana sector of Chisinau. Following a disagreement with her, he is accused of raping and strangling her, after which he attempted to stage her death as a suicide by causing cuts to her hand.

Before leaving the apartment, the defendant cleaned the surfaces to erase any evidence and flooded the apartment. He then used a false passport to escape the Republic of Moldova but was later located and repatriated from a country within the European Union.

During the investigation, he did not plead guilty. The criminal investigation was conducted by the Ciocana Police Inspectorate, under the supervision of the Chisinau Municipal Prosecutor's Office, Ciocana Office.
