Surge in respiratory illnesses triggers health alerts and school quarantines in southern Moldova

Health authorities in the Gagauzia Autonomy and Taraclia district report a significant spike in acute respiratory infections and influenza. Medical centers in Comrat and Corten are currently treating dozens of patients daily, with children representing the majority of cases.

To ensure the safety of students and faculty, several educational institutions have transitioned to remote learning or implemented strict quarantine measures. The Comrat Health Center confirmed a rapid escalation of infections over the last two weeks, noting an unusual prevalence of bronchitis and pneumonia among pediatric patients.

"We have observed a high volume of patients with acute respiratory symptoms," stated Valentina Fileva, Deputy Medical Director in Comrat. "While COVID-19 and influenza were not confirmed in all cases, the rising incidence of pneumonia in children is concerning and often requires hospitalization."

In the village of Corten, the local kindergarten has been under quarantine since Tuesday following a cluster of cases. Local health officials noted that while the first infection was recorded on January 16, numbers escalated sharply after January 19.

"Patients are presenting with high fevers of up to 40°C, muscle pain, and severe exhaustion," said Diana Ceavdar, head of the Corten Health Center. She noted, however, that the earliest patients have begun to recover, signaling a potential stabilization of the initial wave.

At the St. Paisius of Hilendar High School, over 70 students and teachers have been affected. In coordination with regional educational departments, school administration shifted all classes online to prevent further transmission.

Health specialists recommend frequent handwashing, wearing masks in crowded areas, and maintaining proper hydration. Residents are urged to seek immediate medical consultation at the first sign of severe fever or respiratory distress.
