A8 highway Moldova-Transylvania link reaches 50% completion

Construction on the initial 24-kilometer section of the Unirii A8 Highway between Târgu Mureș and Miercurea Nirajului has reached a 50% physical completion threshold.

The Romanian Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure confirmed that operations on this strategic segment are advancing ahead of the initial contractual timeline.

Industrial mobilization on site

A workforce of 800 personnel and 700 heavy machinery units are currently deployed on the site daily. Earthworks are moving at an accelerated pace, with over 400,000 cubic meters of embankments completed each month.

The project has officially transitioned to the intensive asphalt paving phase. Contractors plan to lay approximately 25,000 tons of asphalt mix in July, increasing the volume to 40,000 tons in August.

Concurrently, structural works on bridges and overpasses have advanced to a 65% completion rate. The final relocation of high-voltage power lines will be completed by the end of July, clearing the remaining technical bottlenecks.

Strategic regional connectivity

The Romanian government aims to deliver the sector ahead of schedule, opening the first kilometers of the Unirii A8 Highway to traffic in early 2027.

The infrastructure asset forms a critical logistical corridor. It will permanently connect Transylvania with eastern Romania and the Republic of Moldova.

The entire highway corridor is designed to integrate the Republic of Moldova directly into the European Union's motorway network. This connection will be secured via a new border bridge over the Prut River and a dedicated five-kilometer highway link at Ungheni.
